How does a cable modem work?

Our network currently runs it’s downstream at 256QAM modulation in 16, 24, and 32 channel bonding groups.  The effective data rate for each channel after overhead is approximately 38Mbps.  Our upstream runs at 64QAM modulation in a 3 channel bonding group.  The effective data rate for each channel after overhead is approximately 27mbps.
